Dining at a Dog Restaurant

There are many streets in Songyuan with restaurants serving local cuisines. While most of them offer reasonably priced barbecue, porridge, eggs and noodles, there is one that plates out dog, and dog only. Today, I ventured inside to have a firsthand experience of their unusual entrees.

Inside the restaurant

When I entered the restaurant, I realized that the setting was similar to that of many others around the city. The tables were tidily arranged and were lightly decorated with fresh sprigs of variegated flowers. There was also a noticeably spacious and sun-lit passage. Additionally, on each side of the room, there were pastel draperies at the windows. These inspired a homespun decor, which was delicately accentuated by a sparkling chandelier.

Overhead the cashier's counter were framed photographs of the restaurants most delectable fares. From these, I was able to identify the prominent parts of a dog. The head was seemingly baked and honeyed over with a shimmering sauce. The feet appeared barbecued and daintily embellished with shreds of lettuce. In addition to this, the meaty parts of the dog seemed to have been shredded and garnished with a dollop of exquisite sauce. There was also a dog pizza that looked equally delicious and tempting.

Of course, many people were seated and conversing in between mouthfuls of their succulent feast. Not wanting to appear odd, I joined the crowd and settled at a table close to the exit. Seconds later, I was warmly welcomed and served a menu card. The waitress waited patiently while I perused their offerings.

Sweeping my eyes across the Chinese script, I saw the cheapest meal for JMD$224 (US$2) and the most expensive one for JMD$896 (US$8). I thought the price was quite reasonable and beamed at the waitress to convey my delight. I then pointed on one of the meals, and gestured for her to comment on its taste. However, she only responded with a half-hearted smile that revealed a frothy mouth and stained dentures.

Maintaining a facade

I  didn't want her to think I was wasting her time, so I took out my phone and clicked on the translation app. I typed chicken and showed it to her.

As she tried to discern my request, I eyed the room furtively. At one table, I saw some persons drinking a bowl of dog soup. On the counter of another, I saw ground dog bones swimming in a watery brown sauce, and to the back of the room, I saw some men anxiously getting settled to enjoy the fare.

Escaping

I quickly refocused and continued feigning interest. The waitress then indicated that she had no chicken, only dog meat. With that said, I smiled, waved goodbye and left the restaurant. Moreover, an aroma from the kitchen was already wafting through the room, and I didn't want to be tempted :)

Perhaps one day, I will be bold enough to try and live to tell the tale :)

Talk About Awkward Moments

Since my arrival in China on May 3, 2014, I have had many awkward moments. Most days,  I have to sign, point, dramatize or role play in an effort to communicate my requests to the natives. In fact, one day, I had to pretend to be a chicken in order to guarantee the purchase of authentic poultry and not canine products or by-products thereof.   If you have read my previous blogs, you can easily conjure the design of the Chinese restrooms in the public schools. The toilets are at ground level and there are no doors  to privatize the stalls.  One day, I was about to have a 'private' moment, when two female Chinese students decided to form a queue directly in front of me. I tried to shoo them away, but they completely misinterpreted my gesture. They thought I was signing hello! Of course, I kept waving and saying "Go up deh suh man!" and they continued to respond by waving and greeting me with hellos. View of most public restrooms in China  Rec...

How I Survived China

What did I do when the shop attendant moistened his fingertips with saliva just before counting out my change? I ordered more items until di money done ! What did I do when he did the same thing before handing me a bag in which to place the items? I declined his offer, huddled everything in my hand, vowed to have the exact change next time and got myself a durable shopping bag right after. What  did I do after I walked five minutes before finding the supermarket's 'entrance,' and the security guard indicated that I was entering through the exit (She pointed to the EXIT sign.) and then asked me to retrace my steps? I pretended the Chinese characters above the English 'EXIT' confused me, then I proceeded inside. What did I do when the lady cashed my groceries and indicated (in Chinese) that I needed to pay for a 'scandal' ( polythene bag) that I thought would have been complimentary? ( At this point, I had only 5RMB to get a taxi h...

Taxi Ride in Songyuan

I took a taxi today and the driver insisted on having a conversation with me. Now, I really couldn't communicate "no" to him so I responded with "Yeah man," Same way," "Yahmejah," (Jamaica), "Yuh know where you taking me, right?" "Cut cross yah suh," "Tun up the road," "Up deh suh me a come off" and "Let me off right yah suh." At some points during the conversation, he was convulsing with laughter. What did I do? I guffawed just the same. All in all, we had a good chat. Lord knows what he was saying to me :)  A taxi in Songyuan
